Homes (for Haiti) for the Holidays
Homes (for Haiti) for the Holidays!
On Friday, October 7th and into the morning of Saturday, October 8th, 2016, Hurricane Matthew made its presence known on St. Simons Island. Mercifully, the storm shifted to the east and arrived between tides, which kept the wind forces and storm surge much lower than they were predicted to be. When residents were allowed to return to their homes on the island, on October 11th, they found damage and destruction, but not the total devastation they had feared. The general feeling was one of great relief and sincere thankfulness that the island had been largely spared.
One thousand miles to the south of St. Simons, the island of Hispaniola, where the country of Haiti is located, was not so fortunate. Hurricane Matthew pummeled the western end of the country, claiming the lives of over 1,000 Haitians and leaving 1.4 million people in dire need of humanitarian aid. Homes that were not totally swept away were reduced to rubble.
Now the people of Haiti need a hand up, after this most recent natural catastrophe, not a hand out. One of the people who has offered that hand is St. Simons resident and co-founder of Christian Light Ministries, Emory Wilson. He has gone to the areas of destruction, seen the desperate need for housing and shelter and has organized an effort to assist in rebuilding at least 100 houses for and with the families who lost their homes. The cost per home: $400.
On Thursday, December 15th, a musical benefit concert, “Homes (for Haiti) for the Holidays!” took place at Christ Church, which raised enough funding to rebuild 44 houses. Local musical favorites, Michael Hulett and Phil King performed at this great evening of music and fun, and were joined by the Vi Fluentis Children’s Choir and our own Brad Hamil. (Click here to see photos from the event.) Edward’s on St. Simons donated beautiful table arrangements, which were sold to raise more funds. It was a tremendous night of giving and the generosity continued into the next week, when donations continued coming in. To date, enough funds have been raised to rebuild 60 houses! Many thanks to all who have contributed to this desperately needed work. Donations are still being gratefully accepted, if you would like to help.
